Power Carving a Wooden head – Cell phone holder – Lamp
Woodworking project using the Arbortech power caving grinder attachments, the Turboplane and Ball gouge are good tools and allow you to make decent sculpture and wood art, i added a phone stand speaker and lamp to make it actually functional as you can never go wrong with an extra lamp around the house.
Arbortech Ball gouge from Brimarc Tools & Machinery http://www.brimarc.com/category/Arbortech-794620.htm
Cut from a piece of wind blown Ash that fell about 8 months ago, its still very fresh and now it has been bought into the house has also started to split.
I chose a piece with a bit of a kink in it as i wanted the head to look a bit like the easter island ones as they are probably one of the coolest pieces of art on the planet. ABout 10 inches in diameter and 3 feet long. The thickest part of the tree would make up the base and provides stability.
Using the Turboplane I then took off all the bark to expose the white wood underneath. I sketched on a rough design and then started to nibble away up to the lines that id drawn still using the turboplane. You can go so far with it before you start having trouble with fine detail and tight reliefs.
I switched over to the Ball gouge, Ill be bringing a full video covering this tool over the next week or so. Its a great tool like a chisel in some ways, its tricky to get used to but youre getting great results straight away, maybe a little rough and im still learning with this.
Added more definition about the face and then started digging deep in the eyes and mouth. I took the guard off the grinder to dig in extra deep.
Routered and drilled a slot for the phone holder and used the long drill for the bulb fitting. Found an old computer lead and threaded it through and wired it up.
