carver
Foredom SR

This Foredom SR unit, at 1/6 h.p., is reversible. Maximum rpm. is 18,000, and high torque at all speeds. Industrial quality, will last many years. Good for heavy carving where you may be using 1/4" burs to rough out your fish carving. The inner shaft requires occasional greasing. The reversible feature is very useful in many carving operations.

This Ram Micromotor is basically the same unit I have, which I purchased in 1998, except my Ram is 35,000 R.P.M. It has performed without any problems and I use it more often than my Foredom unit. This particular unit is variable speed 0 - 45,000 R.P.M.; hand or foot control; forward / reverse direction. Carving Burs

When it comes to power carving burs, there is a vast variety to choose from. There are ruby carvers, diamond bits, stump cutters, solid carbide, Typhoon carbide burs, Saburr Tooth carbide burs, high speed steel cutters, Dura Grit carbide cutters, Ceramcut Blue stones, white, green, and brown texturing stones, etc.

Some of these burs are inexpensive while others are not, so you must understand what these burs can do for you before purchasing. As with most tools, you have to be careful you don't end up with tools you don't really need and therefore not use. The best approach is to talk to other carvers for their opinions and purchase the burs as you need them.

They come in a variety of shapes, diameters, and degrees of aggressive cutting. Shank sizes are 3/32", 1/8", and 1/4". It is very tempting to order burs which will do similar tasks as others, so be informed and choose wisely.

One thing you will need is some way of storing the burs. I have made several holders myself out of scrap wood. You can simply use a piece about 11/2"x 11/2"x 10" and drill holes to accomodate the various diameter burs. It is important to have them organized and readily available.

I bought a nice set of diamond burs years ago, and they have been invaluable to me. The Kutzall carbide burs work well, as do the Typhoon burs, and the Saburr Tooth carbide burs.
